SRF Relies on openGear for Flexible and Sustainable Signal Processing
Sustainable Modernization Instead of Full Replacement
As part of a comprehensive refurbishment project, AVC-Systems AG had the privilege of advising and supporting SRF (Swiss Radio and Television) in modernizing its signal processing infrastructure.
Rather than opting for a complete system replacement, a deliberately sustainable approach was chosen. Upgrades were implemented precisely where technically required – particularly in connection with 1080p50 compatibility.
SRG broadcasters now provide their main program feed in 1080p50, enabling lossless redistribution and seamless integration of technical auxiliary services. This progressive Full HD standard ensures not only superior image quality during fast motion but also preserves the integrity of subtitles, audio description, and additional accessibility services for viewers with special needs.
Our Solution
AVC-Systems AG supplied more than 40 openGear frames, equipped with over 360 processing cards for:
- Signal processing
- De-interlacing
- Optical/electrical conversion
- Signal distribution
The modular architecture allowed seamless integration into the existing infrastructure – without unnecessary system disruptions or operational downtime.
Why openGear?
The openGear platform is an open, modular system that accommodates cards from multiple manufacturers within a single frame.
This provides decisive advantages:
- Maximum flexibility in vendor selection
- Reduced dependency on individual suppliers
- Integration ofSDI, IP, fiber, and processing modules within the same frame
- Centralized control and monitoring via Ross DashBoard
This ensures that the infrastructure remains scalable, efficient, and easy to manage in the long term.
Platform Strategy Within SRG
Not only SRF, but also the other SRG business units – RSI, RTS, and RTR – rely heavily on the openGear platform. This underlines its strategic importance across the entire SRG infrastructure.
AVC-Systems AG is proud to have supported SRF in this forward-looking modernization project.
We sincerely thank them for their trust and valued partnership.
