Fully automated studio with robotic camera and LED scenography @Telebasel

Telebasel Logo

Telebasel, the leading regional broadcaster for Northwestern Switzerland, has been a fixture in the media landscape of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, and neighboring regions since 1993. With programs such as punkt6 for daily news, sonntagstalk for regional discussions, and coverage of events like the Basel Carnival or Art Basel, Telebasel reaches around 200,000 viewers each week, complemented by digital platforms such as the Telebasel app.

As part of an extensive modernization in 2023, Telebasel set a milestone for automated news and talk productions with the construction of the new Studio 2. The goal was to create a modern, efficient studio environment capable of delivering professional content with minimal staffing requirements—without compromising on quality or flexibility. AVC-Systems AG was commissioned to design, supply, and integrate the broadcast technology, with the challenge of upgrading the existing control rooms during ongoing operations to ensure all broadcasts continued without interruption.

Our Solution

Construction began in December 2022 with the pouring of a special robot-compatible studio floor, designed for use with Ross Video’s free-roaming “CamBot” camera robot. This system enables automated camera movements and positioning in the studio—precise, repeatable, and flexible.

The central studio automation system, powered by Ross OverDrive, together with the XPression graphics solution, enables a highly integrated production workflow. As a result, a complete live broadcast can be operated by a single operator—covering camera movements, graphics, and vision mixing.

Highlights der Installation

  • Fully Automated Studio
Enables complete control of the entire production by a single operator, including cameras, graphics, and vision mixing.
  • Ross CamBot Robotic Camera System
Free-roaming camera robot for precise, repeatable, and dynamic camera movements.
  • Dynamic Camera Tracking with Waterbird
Three Panasonic AW-UE150 PTZ cameras were installed on a Waterbird track system—delivering impressive camera moves within a compact studio space.
  • Multifunctional LED Walls
Five LED surfaces with varying pixel pitches (1.2 mm to 3.9 mm) provide a versatile and adaptable studio design. Content is synchronized and controlled via a Colorlight controller, using three Full HD SDI signals.
  • Modular Rebuild During Ongoing Operations
Thanks to precise planning, the new studio was constructed while live broadcasting continued without interruption.

Go-Live

On May 24, 2023, the new studio was successfully brought on air with its first broadcast—on time, seamlessly, and with strong media impact.

With Studio 2, Telebasel delivers an impressive example of how modern technology and automation can be combined with creative studio design—efficient, professional, and future-proof. Its productions benefit from dynamic camera movements, flexible LED sets, and automated workflows that present regional topics, such as the Basel Autumn Fair or elections, in a visually engaging way. Viewers enjoy a modern, high-quality TV experience that brings Northwestern Switzerland closer together.

AVC-Systems AG is proud to have realized this forward-looking project with Telebasel and looks forward to continuing to strengthen the regional media landscape with innovative technology.
